When you’re a teenager and in your early twenties dial-up seems desperately slow and excruciatingly unsteady. Whereas as you grow older you realise that most connections are excruciatingly unsteady and that is the Internet condition. Most of us continue to stay connected because we’re convinced that somewhere along the broadband, with WiFi and fibre optics and Cisco, we will end up in some magical tunnel with some gateway. It’s a fallacy, of course, but it’s a form of religion. You have to believe. There is a light that never goes out and it’s called GPRS.
